The European countries that do not participate in the Schengen zone include Cyprus and Ireland.
The Schengen Area essentially creates a unified jurisdiction for international travel, featuring a shared visa policy. It derives its name from the 1985 Schengen Agreement, which was signed in the town of Schengen, located in Luxembourg. Among the 27 EU member states, 22 actively engage in the Schengen Area, and even countries that are not part of the Schengen zone also reap certain benefits from it.
In essence, these are two distinct entities, even though many authorities belong to both. The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union, whereas the Schengen Area facilitates the unrestricted movement of people among participating nations.
The European Union comprises 29 member states, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Hungary, Kosovo, Armenia, Moldova, Belarus, Russia, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Azerbaijan, and Georgia are not members of the European Union.
